Source PDF resolution. A vector PDF is scale-perfect by construction. A rasterised PDF (a scan of a paper drawing, for instance) carries an embedded resolution that the tiling tool must respect. Print a rasterised plan at the wrong dpi and the on-paper scale shifts.

Step One: Prepare the Source PDF

Overlap is generally not useful for plans. The standard plan assembly method is butt-joining trimmed sheets so that lines match exactly across the seam. Overlap creates a visible double-printed strip that is awkward when you are reading dimensions across the seam.

Step Four: Print at Actual Size

Send the job to the printer. The settings that matter at the printer driver level:

  • Actual size (100%). Not “fit to page”, not “scale to fit”, not “shrink oversized pages”. Step Five: Verify the Printed Scale

This is the step almost everyone skips and almost everyone should do. Print, assemble, and then verify with a tape measure that the printed plan is the scale you intended.

The verification ritual:

  1. Find a known dimension on the source plan — a wall labelled “5000 mm”, a doorway labelled “900 mm”, any element with a known real-world size.
  2. Place a tape measure across the same element on the printed assembly.
  3. Read the measurement.
  4. Compute: printed length × scale factor = expected real-world length.

For a 1:50 plan, a 5000 mm wall should measure 100 mm on the paper. If the tape measure reads 98 mm, the print is 2% under-scaled — likely a “fit to page” driver default that you missed. If it reads 102 mm, the print is 2% over-scaled — perhaps a tiling-tool error or a paper-size mismatch.

Print the canonical set once per revision. When a new revision lands, tile and print the full set. Roll the printed sheets into a tube or fold to A4 portfolio size. Carry the entire set to site as a paper artefact.

For routine plan sets where the cost adds up — ten or twenty A1 sheets per revision, multiple revisions per project — the print-shop math may favour outsourcing. Dimensions read fuzzy on the printed plan. Source was rasterised rather than vector, or printer driver was at draft quality. Re-export from CAD as vector PDF and re-print at high quality.

Scale is consistently off by 1-3%. Driver-level scaling — most likely “fit to page” or paper-size mismatch. Re-check driver settings.

One specific dimension is off but others are correct. The source PDF has a non-uniform scale, possibly because it was generated from a multi-viewport CAD layout. Re-check the source CAD file.

Text annotations are illegible at the print scale. The annotation font size is below what is readable at the scale you are printing at.
