If you have ever assembled a tiled poster from a stack of printed sheets and discovered, after trimming and aligning, that part of the image is missing along every seam — narrow strips of content that should have been there, gone — you have already met the central problem of consumer-printer poster work. You did not do anything wrong. The trimmer did not slip. The printer was not faulty. The tiling tool was being honest about what it knew. The problem is geometric, it is structural, and once you understand it, you stop fighting it and start working with it.

This post is the educational deep-dive on why the geometry of printer margins matters for poster tiling, what makes the standard paper sizes do what they do, and why some Mac apps handle the geometry honestly and most do not. It exists for the long-tail “why” question — the reader who has just been bitten by margin clipping and wants to understand it before reaching for a fix — and for anyone who wants the mental model that makes tiled poster printing predictable rather than mysterious.

The Non-Printable Margin Is a Physical Property of the Printer

Every consumer printer has a region around the edge of the sheet that the print head physically cannot reach. This is the non-printable margin. It is not a software setting, it is not a driver default, it is not something you can turn off. It is a hardware constraint imposed by the geometry of the print mechanism — the rollers that grip the paper, the print head’s safe travel range, the registration tolerance of the paper feed.

Different printer families have different margins. The published manufacturer specifications tell the story:

  • HP LaserJet Pro and Officejet families: typical non-printable margins of 4.2 mm at the top, 4.2 mm at the bottom, 6.4 mm at the left, and 6.4 mm at the right.
  • Brother HL series laser printers: 3 mm non-printable border on all sides.
  • Canon PIXMA inkjets: vary by model, but few go below a 3 mm minimum margin on standard A4 or Letter.
  • Epson WorkForce inkjets: typically 3 mm at the top, 14 mm at the bottom (the back-edge margin is larger because the rollers grip there last), 3 mm at the sides.
  • Xerox WorkCentre office printers: 4 mm on all sides for standard mode; “edge-to-edge” mode reduces this to 2.5 mm on some models.

Even the most aggressive consumer printers have at least 2-3 mm of unreachable border on each side. That figure is the floor; many printers have considerably more.

The reason is straightforward mechanics. The printer needs to grip the paper while it prints. The rollers and the registration system define a region the print head must avoid. The print head itself has a finite physical width and a finite safe travel — extending it past the edge of the paper risks ink contamination, paper jam, or roller damage. The non-printable margin is the safety zone that prevents these problems.

Some inkjets advertise “borderless” printing. This is not what it sounds like. Borderless printing is an over-spray mode that intentionally fires ink past the edge of the paper, onto a sponge inside the printer that catches the overspray. It works only with photo-grade glossy paper that costs three to five times standard copy paper, only on selected paper sizes (typically 4×6, 5×7, A4 photo paper), and it requires periodic cleaning of the over-spray sponge. For office paper on a normal printer, you have a margin. Always. The “no margin” promise is a special-case feature for photo printing, not a general capability.

The Geometry: What the Margin Means for Tiling

A single sheet has a printable area inside the margin and a non-printable strip around it. For a Letter sheet (216 × 279 mm) with 4 mm margins on all sides, the printable area is 208 × 271 mm. For an A4 sheet (210 × 297 mm) with the same margins, the printable area is 202 × 289 mm.

When you tile a poster across multiple sheets, only the printable area of each sheet contributes to the final assembly. The non-printable strips at the edges either stay blank (if the tiling tool was honest) or show clipped content (if the tiling tool was not). Either way, they cannot carry image data.

The implication is simple but important: when you trim a printed sheet to the printable boundary and butt-join it to the next sheet, the trim line is the edge of the printable area, not the edge of the paper. The paper’s outer 3-6 mm border is waste, removed by the trim.

For a 4 × 4 grid of A4 sheets at 4 mm margin on all sides, the math is:

  • Each sheet contributes 202 mm × 289 mm to the assembly (printable area).
  • 4 columns × 202 mm = 808 mm of horizontal coverage.
  • 4 rows × 289 mm = 1156 mm of vertical coverage.
  • The trim removes 4 mm × 2 = 8 mm from each sheet horizontally and the same vertically. Total trim removed across the assembly: 32 mm horizontally (8 mm from 4 columns) plus 32 mm vertically.

The total physical size of the assembled poster is exactly 808 × 1156 mm. The total paper consumed is 4 × 210 × 4 × 297 = 998,640 square mm; the printed assembly is 933,648 square mm. Roughly 6.5% of the paper is trimmed away. This is normal, expected, and the cost of working within the margin geometry honestly.

Where Generic Tiling Tools Get It Wrong

Here is the failure mode that produces the visible gaps at every seam. A naive tiling tool — including macOS Preview’s “Tile” option in many situations, and Safari’s print pipeline — does the following:

  1. Treats each sheet as if its full size is printable.
  2. Splits the source image evenly across the sheets, with each sheet receiving an equal slice.
  3. Sends the slice to the printer.
  4. The printer crops the slice at the printable boundary, losing the outer 3-6 mm of every sheet.
  5. You receive sheets where the outer edges are blank (the printer cropped them) and the inside of each sheet is the image content.
  6. You trim the blank edges away.
  7. When you butt-join adjacent trimmed sheets, the content that fell in the cropped region is gone — there is a 3-6 mm strip of missing image at every seam.

The problem is not the printer cropping the content — that is the printer’s job, given the hardware constraint. The problem is the tiling tool failing to account for the cropping when it laid out the slices in the first place.

A margin-compensating tiling tool does the following instead:

  1. Treats each sheet as having a printable area smaller than the paper.
  2. Splits the source image so that each sheet receives a slice sized to the printable area, not the full paper size.
  3. Places the slice such that when the printer crops at the printable boundary, the slice fits exactly inside the printable area with no clipping.
  4. The non-printable strips remain blank.
  5. You trim the blank strips away.
  6. When you butt-join adjacent trimmed sheets, the content lines up exactly at the trim line — no gap.

The layout adjusts so that nothing important falls inside the dimmed region, and so that when you trim, the trim line coincides with the printable boundary, not with image content. The maths is honest because the tool’s design treats it as a first-class concern.

The contrast with macOS Preview’s Tile option is not that Preview is buggy — it is that Preview’s Tile option was bolted on as a convenience for the rare case of poster printing, without a comprehensive design that addresses the hardware geometry. The same is true of Adobe Acrobat’s Poster option, though Acrobat does respect margins in some cases (the default behaviour and the various sub-options interact in non-obvious ways that catch many users out). Overlap, Trim Margin, and the Geometry of Assembly

Margin compensation handles the printer’s physical constraints. There is a second geometry concept that matters at assembly time: the distinction between trim margin and overlap, and when each is appropriate.

Trim margin is the strip of blank paper around the printed area on each sheet. It is always present (it is the consequence of the non-printable margin). At assembly time, you trim this strip away with a guillotine, a craft knife, or a paper cutter, leaving a sheet where the printed content reaches exactly to the trim line on all four sides. Adjacent trimmed sheets can then be butt-joined: laid edge-to-edge with no overlap, content meeting content along the seam.

Butt-joining is the highest-quality assembly method when the printing is margin-compensated. The seam is a line where adjacent printed regions meet exactly, with no double-printed strip and no gap. Done well, the seam is visible only as a faint hairline at viewing distance.

Overlap is a different concept: a strip of duplicate content printed on adjacent sheets, designed to give a forgiveness margin during assembly. If you are not trimming sheets precisely, or if you are using an overlap-and-tape assembly method rather than a butt-join method, overlap lets adjacent sheets sit on top of each other with the duplicate region hiding the tape and giving you slack to align the visible seam.

A 5-10 mm overlap is typical when overlap is used. The trade-off is that overlap shows as a slight ridge or a doubled-content strip at the seam — visible at close inspection, less visible at viewing distance. Some posters look better butt-joined; some look better overlap-taped. The choice depends on the assembly method and the viewing distance.

For most poster printing, butt-joining trimmed sheets gives the cleanest result. For posters that will be handled (folded, rolled, unrolled), overlap-taping gives a more durable assembly that survives manipulation better.

Paper Standards: ISO 216 vs ANSI

The paper size you tile onto interacts with the geometry of tiling in non-obvious ways. There are two paper-size standards that dominate world office printing, and they have different mathematical properties.

ISO 216 (A series) is the metric standard used in most of the world outside the United States and Canada. The series is defined by two properties:

  • The aspect ratio of every sheet is 1:√2 (≈ 1.414). This is the only aspect ratio that has the property of preserving the ratio when the sheet is folded in half (long edge against long edge). An A4 folded in half becomes two A5 sheets with the same proportions. An A3 folded in half becomes two A4 sheets with the same proportions.
  • The area of A0 is exactly 1 m². All other sizes follow by halving: A1 is 0.5 m², A2 is 0.25 m², down to A10 at 0.001 m².

The dimensions:

  • A0: 841 × 1189 mm (1 m²)
  • A1: 594 × 841 mm
  • A2: 420 × 594 mm
  • A3: 297 × 420 mm
  • A4: 210 × 297 mm
  • A5: 148 × 210 mm
  • A6: 105 × 148 mm

For tiled printing, ISO 216’s defining property has a profound consequence: a 2 × 1 grid of A4 sheets gives you exactly an A3 sheet (594 × 297 mm — wait, that is the wrong way; let me redo). Actually: a 2 × 1 grid of A4 portrait sheets (210 × 297 mm each) gives you 420 × 297 mm, which is A3 in landscape. A 2 × 2 grid of A4 portrait gives you 420 × 594 mm, which is A2. A 2 × 4 grid of A4 portrait gives you 420 × 1188 mm, very close to A1 portrait. A 4 × 4 grid of A4 portrait gives you 840 × 1188 mm, very close to A0 portrait.

In other words, ISO paper sizes scale so that doubling the sheet count in one dimension takes you up exactly one paper-size step. This makes it easy to design for tiled output: if you want an A1-sized poster, you tile across an A0-equivalent layout, which is 2 × 4 A4 sheets or 2 × 2 A3 sheets or 1 × 1 A1 sheets at a print shop.

ANSI (American National Standards Institute) uses a different system. The ANSI sizes:

  • ANSI A: 8.5 × 11 inches (216 × 279 mm) — US Letter
  • ANSI B: 11 × 17 inches (279 × 432 mm) — Tabloid
  • ANSI C: 17 × 22 inches
  • ANSI D: 22 × 34 inches
  • ANSI E: 34 × 44 inches

The ANSI sizes alternate between two aspect ratios — Letter is roughly 1.294, Tabloid is roughly 1.545. Doubling Letter gives you Tabloid; doubling Tabloid gives you C; the aspect ratio swings back and forth as you scale up. This is less elegant than ISO 216 and slightly more annoying for tiled printing because the proportions of the assembled tiled poster depend on whether you have an even or odd number of doublings.

For tiled printing on Letter paper specifically, the practical implication is that the natural assembly ratios fall at:

  • 2 × 2 Letter = Tabloid-equivalent (17 × 22 inches)
  • 2 × 4 Letter = ANSI C-equivalent (17 × 44 inches)
  • 4 × 4 Letter = ANSI D-equivalent (34 × 44 inches)

These do not match the proportions of your source image as cleanly as ISO sizes do. You will more often need to crop or letterbox the image to fit the assembled aspect ratio — a small but real annoyance compared to the ISO workflow.

The practical advice: if you have a choice (some printers handle both), prefer A4 over Letter for tiled posters because the proportions work out better. If you are stuck with Letter (because that is what is loaded), the geometry still works — you just need to be more thoughtful about source aspect ratio.

The Compounding Effect: Margin Geometry Across Many Tiles

A subtle but important consequence of the margin geometry is that it compounds across tile counts.

For a single sheet at 4 mm margins, you lose 8 mm horizontally (4 mm + 4 mm) — about 4% of the 210 mm A4 width.

For a 2 × 1 grid of two A4 sheets, you have one internal seam plus two outer trim regions. The two sheets contribute 2 × 210 = 420 mm of paper width, but only 2 × 202 = 404 mm of printable width. The 16 mm of “wasted” paper is the four 4 mm margin strips (two outer, two internal trimmed away).

For a 4 × 1 grid of four A4 sheets, you have three internal seams plus two outer trim regions. The total paper width is 4 × 210 = 840 mm; the printable width contributing to the assembly is 4 × 202 = 808 mm. The 32 mm of wasted paper is the eight 4 mm margin strips.

In percentage terms, the waste is constant at about 4% of the paper width regardless of tile count — every sheet contributes the same proportion of its width to the assembly, and the wasted strips are always the same size relative to the paper.

What changes with tile count is the number of seams. A 2 × 1 grid has one internal seam; a 4 × 1 grid has three; a 4 × 4 grid has 24 internal seams (12 horizontal + 12 vertical, counting the alignments between adjacent rows and columns). Each seam is a place where alignment can go wrong. Each seam adds visible structure to the assembled poster, however well aligned.

The implication: there is a quality reason to prefer larger paper sizes for poster work, beyond just convenience. A 2 × 2 grid of A3 has 4 internal seams; the same physical poster from a 4 × 4 grid of A4 has 24. The A3 grid is much easier to align cleanly and the result has fewer visible seams. If your printer accepts A3, use it.

When the Geometry Cannot Be Fixed

A few cases where the standard tiling-with-margin-compensation workflow does not work, and what to do instead:

Source has critical content right at the edge that cannot be cropped. Some posters have full-bleed content that extends to the very edge of the design — frames that touch the paper edge, gradients that fade to a coloured border. Margin compensation does not crop content (it scales the layout to fit within the printable area), but the fully-bled effect is impossible on a margin-bound printer because nothing can be printed in the margin region. The workaround: design in two layers, with the bleed effect on a layer you accept will be trimmed away during assembly, or send the full-bleed version to a print shop with edge-to-edge plotter capability.

Printer has unusually large margins on one edge. Some printers have a 14 mm or larger margin on the back edge (the edge that exits the printer last). This asymmetry interacts oddly with tiling because adjacent sheets have different printable heights depending on which edge is “back”. Tile in landscape if possible to put the large margin on the side rather than top/bottom; otherwise plan for visible alignment slack on the asymmetric edge.

Borderless inkjet mode is unavoidable. Some printers default to borderless mode for certain paper sizes and there is no way to disable it in the driver. The borderless mode actually prints to the edge but with overspray onto an internal sponge — this is fine for single-sheet output but produces unpredictable behaviour for tiled output because the “edge” is not a clean line. Switch to a paper size that does not trigger borderless mode, typically A4 plain rather than 4×6 photo.

What This Means for Mac App Choice

The geometry of printer margins is the strongest argument for using a Mac app specifically designed for tiled printing rather than a generic tool with a “tile” option bolted on.

A specifically designed app does these things automatically:

  • Reads the printer’s reported non-printable margins and shows them in the preview.
  • Lays out the source image so that nothing important falls inside the margin region.
  • Generates output that, when trimmed to the printable boundary, butt-joins cleanly without gaps.
  • Handles the page-order problem so that sheets emerge in the correct row-major sequence for assembly.
  • Supports overlap as a separate concept from trim margin, so you can choose your assembly method independently.

Are there printers with no non-printable margin at all? Wide-format plotters (HP DesignJet, Canon imagePROGRAF, Epson SureColor) have very small or zero non-printable margins on most paper. They are the right tool for full-bleed large-format work but cost €1,500-€5,000 new and are not what most home users have. For consumer printers, the margin is unavoidable.
